Deer with Growth
65
The Photograph
This picture is from the collection of H E Zimmerman.
A note attached is something of a puzzle as it seems to beling to a different picture. Maybe someone out there has the note for mine and i have the picture for theirs?
His own notes states: "Like humans, animals are often afflicted with strange malformations, some painful and inconvenient, and some not. Hre is shown a ewe belonging to Vernon Carr of Brookesmith, Tex., there being attached to the underside of the animal's neck a growth ehich looks for all the world like a hornet's nest, about the size of the ewe's head. It is of a horny nature and does not seem to give the animal any pain, nor does it seem to be of more than minor inconvenience to the sheep, nor interfere with motherhood, for the ewe has been the mother of lambs at various times the past seven years, twins having been born this year. Strange as it may seem this extra baggage does not interfere with the animal grazing or swallowing. the upper part has a growth of wool on it."
Meanwhile the picture I have is of a deer with only one antler that also has a growth on its neck.
The Condition
Growths on deer may occur for a number of reasons, including:
- Abcesses
- Fatty tumor
- Fibromatosis (papilloma virus)
